Losing your job
Losing your job can be a real shock. Along with finding a new job, you may be worried about how to manage your money until you can find new employment.
Below are some tips and resources to help you.
Understand your rights
Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for a redundancy package. Your employer should have a process or policy that outlines their redundancy conditions. Employers are legally required to provide a fair redundancy if you worked for them for at least two years.
Check Citizens Advice Bureau for more information on redundancies.
See if you’re covered
If you have income protection insurance, you may be able to make a claim with your provider. You might also be entitled to receive benefits to help you.
For more information on income protection, go to Citizens Advice Bureau or MoneyHelper.
Look at available benefits
There are a range of government benefits that can help you manage your money while you look for work. Find out if you’re eligible using this free calculator.
Build a budget
If you’ve lost your job, it can be difficult to know where to start in terms of a timeframe for your budget. Six months could be a useful starting point for your budget. The first things you might want to consider are what you are spending per month and areas you could potentially cut back.
